Hudson Bay Expedition 2005 to launch May 1st
Minneapolis, MN--On May 1st, 2005 Scott Miller and Todd Foster will begin
their canoe expedition to retrace, for the 75th anniversary, the trip
taken by Eric Sevareid and Walter Port in 1930. Sevareid, who went on
to become a famous newscaster with CBS, wrote the book 'Canoeing with
the Cree' about his trip. The popularity of the book has made the adventure
one of the best known canoe trips ever taken. Miller and Foster will paddle
over the same 2,000 miles as Sevareid and Port, from St. Cloud, MN to
Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada.
Miller and Foster will paddle from Todd's backyard in St. Cloud down
the Mississippi to the Twin Cities. On Saturday, May 7th, a public launch
party will be held at Fort Snelling State Park in St. Paul. From Fort
Snelling, the first of four main sections of their trip begins: a 330
mile paddle upstream on the Minnesota River. Next is a 550 mile meander
down the length of the Red River-the border between North Dakota and Minnesota.
After crossing through Winnipeg, Manitoba, the two will reach gigantic
Lake Winnipeg, the 7th largest lake in North America. The final stretch
of their journey will take them through 500 miles of remote, rapids-filled
wilderness rivers and lakes to the historic port of the fur trade: York
Factory, on Hudson Bay.
Foster and Miller will be keeping an on-line journal of their trip as
they paddle. Their goal is to show the changes that have occurred along
the route in the past 75 years, while inspiring people to live out their
dreams. They will take time to talk with people they meet and take pictures
of the changing waterways and landscapes.
The Minnesota Historical Society has released a 75th anniversary edition
of 'Canoeing with the Cree', with a forward by Minnesota explorer Ann
Bancroft. Miller and Foster are selling the book to raise funds for their
trip, along with expedition T-shirts. The expedition is looking for a
major sponsor, having already secured numerous equipment and food sponsors.
